Helmet Heat® Ice Reduction System & Installation

Before & After HH The Helmet Heat Ice Reduction System should only be installed by trained and certified Gutter Helmet dealer like Gutter Solutions. Different hardware and configuration options are available for Helmet Heat, so talk to us about the best setup for your home and for the weather conditions typical of your area. Planning the Circuits A certified Helmet Heat professional will first plan the circuits and take the right measurements according to your installation requirements. There are three factors that should be determined beforehand, two of which should be discussed between you and your Gutter Solutions representative. The third will depend on the size of your system. Factor 1: Power Source To determine the proper length of the cables, you need to first decide where the power will come from. Because Helmet Heat’s electrical junction box is weatherproof, it can be placed in any exterior location. Common locations are near the gutter downspout at the base of the home, allowing the power to be supplied through a crawl space or basement. The heat cable will run up the downspout. Another popular junction box location is just below the roof eave. The power supply line can be placed inside the attic near a gutter end, so the heat cable can be incorporated into the guttering system. Factor 2: Wire Placement For some installations, two lengths of self-regulating heat cable (one under the gutter cover and one through the gutter and down the downspout) will do the job. However, a three-wire set-up (two through the cover) is recommended for areas where winter weather can get extreme. Your Gutter Solutions representative will advise you on the best option for where you live. Factor 3: Cable Location Whether you choose to have a two- or three-wire setup, the entire system will consist of one continuous length of heat cable. The wire will run from the power connection box to the end of the gutter system. In cases where the cable system is over 450 feet, additional power boxes will need to be installed and the cables continued from that point on until the end. Once again, Gutter Solutions will advise you on your best options. Factor 4: Cable Length & Type The third factor affecting your installation is the length of cable that must be installed and the expected temperatures to which it will be exposed. The heating cable’s outer jacket is progressively marked in lineal foot increments, enabling the installer and electrician to confirm the overall cable length in feet for each circuit at the head and tail. A licensed electrician will connect the self-regulating heating cable to the power source, per local and national electrical codes. Ground fault equipment protection will also be used for each circuit.

Why Are Ice Dams Forming on my Roof?

581_impulse fx mold

ICE DAMS: Several quick fixes but only one cure.

An ice dam is a hump of ice that forms at the edge of a roof under certain winter conditions. It can damage both your roof and the inside of your home. It will put gutters and downspouts at risk, too.

HOW DO ICE DAMS FORM?
Ice dams form when the roof over the attic gets warm enough to melt the underside of the layer of snow on the roof. The water trickles down between the layer of snow and the shingles until it reaches the eave, which stays cold because it extends beyond the side of the house. At the edge of the roof, the water freezes, gradually growing into a mound.
The flatter the pitch of the roof, the easier it is for an ice dam to get a grip. Gutters at the eaves can also trap snow and ice. If snow and ice builds up high enough in the gutter, it can provide a foundation for an ice dam.

WHAT DAMAGE DO ICE DAMS CAUSE?
Snow and ice melt can back up behind the dam and seeps underneath the shingles. Eventually, it will drip into the insulation and down into the ceilings and exterior walls beneath the eave, ruining sheetrock and paint, and forming black mold. If the ice dam breaks free, it can pull shingles and gutters off with it, and it will damage anything it falls on: shrubs, windowsills, cars, pets, and people. If the roof sheathing remains wet, it may rot.

"Guaranteed Gutters", are they worth it?

Thanks Tom Sanderrs for your help with this article

My brother, Jim, purchased a new gutter system a few years ago - they "looked" great. Then the rain came. He put on his rain coat, went out to examine his FINE, NEW gutter system. All the way around his house water was leaking behind the gutters causing damage to the fascia. He call the next day...no answeres no guarantees!

A guarantee is an important part of buying a product. Risk free buying is smart buying. You want to always have a guarantee with the product you purchase; you never know what might go wrong. Ideally it should be unconditional. There are several reasons why you should always buy a product with a guarantee. Here are a few.

Why you need a guarantee...

* Defects in any product: defective products can often occur despite your buying from a reputable business. This isn't anyone's fault and has to be expected to happen from time to time. This is why it is best to purchase from a business that has a good guarantee that doesn't try to profit from, or wiggle its way out of a free replacement policy.

* Shows the business cares about its customers: a company that includes a good guarantee with its products shows that it cares about its customers. There is nothing worse than having something go wrong only to realize that the business you're dealing with couldn't give a fig if you don't ever come back. As times get a little tougher these unscrupulous organizations begin to show their true colors.

* Buy with confidence: sometimes it's not what you want and the quality of the product is substandard. Delays in a product's delivery will possibly have a domino effect and hold up other work. Business delays can cost you money as well as your valuable time.

Selecting a Rain Gutter Contractor

BUMMER - The rain gutters aren't working, they're plugged, they're falling off, HECK WE DONT EVEN HAVE RAIN GUTTERS!! Now we have to find someone to help with our gutter system. How do we find one and how do we know if they are any good??

Here are some ideas:

The best way to find any contractor is to ask your friends and neighbors who they use. You can also look on the internet or yellow pages. It's always a good idea to check with the Better Business Bureau.

SEVEN THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHEN HIRING A RAIN GUTTER CONTRACTOR

1. Does the company offer a guarantee, backed by the product's manufacturer?

2. Can the company provide friendly, punctual service?

3. Does the company have a reference list for you to examine?

4. Are the installers Certified and professional?

5. Is the company fully insured, including commercial auto, commercial liability, and workman's compensation?

6. Do they offer a wide variety of specialty products, colors and services?

7. Can they provide financing options?

NORTH HILL BLUNDER - Don't let it happen to you!

A few years ago we installed gutters for a nice lady on the North Hill in Livingston Montana. She had tall, beautiful cottonwood trees all around her house. We talked about installing our Gutter Helmet over her gutters to keep them clean. She was concerned because she wintered in Arizona, didn't care much for ladders and had a sever case of "Yuck-a-Phobia" when it came to cleaning gutters. But, at the time she didnt want to invest in gutter protection.

Early that next spring we got an urgent call to come and look at her "gutter problem". I arrived to find the down spouts had plugged in the fall, causing the gutters to over flow all winter. When she got back home from Arizona, she found eighteen inches of water in her basement. She spent thousands on a major remodel, including mold remediation. Needless to say, Gutter Helmet was installed that next week.

GUTTERS MUST BE KEPT CLEAN

Before writing this blog, I googled "gutter cleaning", a list of gutter cleaning companies, all kinds of gagets for cleaning your gutters (including the spectacular iRobot Looj 125 gutter cleaning Robot) came up. All this things address the symptom, the real problem is that junk gets into the gutter. That is what needs to be stopped!!

Next I googled "gutter protection". Agian, I got 401,000 results, screens, tubes, sponges, hoods, this works, that dosent work....
FINDING THE BEST GUTTER PROTECTION

When Gutter Solutions was looking for a product to keep their customer's gutters flowing free and clear, we decided on four criteria;

1. It had to keep debris from plugging the gutters and down spouts, and keep rain water flowing through the gutter system.

2. It had to last the life of the home.

3. It had to work in South West Montana's harsh climate.

4. It had to look nice

We tried them all. We decided on Gutter Helmet because it meet all of our guidelines and it is backed by a national company, with a life time guarantee.
So, your gutters must be cleaned this spring. Your know what to do!

Why Snaplock?

No Holes, No Leaks

After years of working with gutters and the gutter industry, we became frustrated with the lack of longevity of most gutter systems, and their inability to withstand Montana's extreme weather conditions.

We began to notice that after about 3 years the gutters would begin to sag in the middle, curl on the ends and leak at joints and corners. This was a real frustration for us - we wanted better for our customers!

After careful inspection of these failing gutter systems we found a common culprit - the gutters were expanding and contracting with temperature change and destroying the old fashion solid mounted fastening system and/or tearing apart the joints.

After carefully researching products on the market we finally found our revolutionary, new Snaplock Gutter System. It answered every problem associated with loose or sagging gutters. In 2006, we enthusiastically became Southwest Montana's exclusive Snaplock Gutter Dealer, and we recommend this system to every customer.

We like Snaplock because it is the strongest gutter attachment system in the world, it creates a free-floating gutter attachment system that does not create mold or rot on your fascia or wear and tear on the attachments system, and comes with a life time transferable manufacturer's guarantee!

Do You Need Rain Gutters?

Why do some homes have gutters and others not? What do gutters do? Are there different types of gutters? Read on to determine if they're beneficial for your home.

Rain Gutters are long, narrow tubes used to reroute rain that falls on the roof of a home or building. The gutters funnel the water to the downspout on the ground where it's directed away from the foundation of the home. This keeps the ground immediately around the house from becoming waterlogged and potentially leaking into the basement or causing damage to the structure as well as surrounding landscaping.

Without gutters, rain runs down the roofline creating a waterfall effect. If the roof has a wide overhang, this may not be too much of a problem for the foundation. But entering and leaving the home without getting wet can be more difficult especially during heavy rains, or seasonal thawing and freezing cycles.

The Cons About Gutters
Because gutters are usually left open, they collect more than rainwater. Leaves, yard debris and insects get into gutters as well. Debris hinders water flow, causing water to back up in the gutter and to overflow. Gutter screens can be added to prevent debris from accumulating. Gutters may also become damaged. Ice, tree limbs, animals, and even heavy rains may dent gutters, weigh them down so they sag, or cause them to pull away from the house. Ice can be particularly destructive in our geographic climate causing both substantial damage to the gutter and to the structure or roof.

Consequently, gutters must be maintained regularly and cleaned once or twice a year, depending on your conditions. For instance, large trees near your home could result in more debris accumulating in the gutters. Spring and summer are the best times for maintenance. Use a garden hose to simulate rain and walk around the home to check for leaks or water that is not draining properly. At Gutter Solutions, we offer a unique product, Gutter Helmet®, to protect your gutters from debris, thus eliminating the need to clean them.

The Pros About Gutters
While gutter maintenance can be a nuisance, fixing damaged gutters is not difficult or expensive. Holes can be patched and plugged with roofing cement. Sagging or loose gutters can usually be hammered back into place. If gutters are badly damaged, a single section can be replaced. Gutters cost as little as $2.50 per foot, depending on the material used, and can be found at your local home center.

Home gutters are most commonly made from vinyl, steel, aluminum or copper. Vinyl is light and strong, but it can become brittle in very cold weather making it more prone to damage from ice or hail. Vinyl gutters may last 5 years or more depending on the thickness and quality of the material. Steel is durable and holds a lot of weight, but it rusts where the finish wears off or becomes damaged. Depending on the coating used on the metal, steel gutters may last from 10 to 50 years.

Aluminum does not rust, but it dents easily compared to other types of gutter material. Aluminum gutters may last 20 to 25 years on average. Notwithstanding a minimum number of seems, aluminum gutters generally minimize the opportunity for leaks. Copper gutters are beautiful and make a design statement besides their actual purpose, but are expensive. With time, the copper develops a rich patina. Unfortunately, copper gutters can make homes a target for thieves because they are valuable and eye-catching.

Choosing whether or not to install gutters and, if so, what type of gutters, depends on your property, weather conditions, and budget. Weigh the pros and cons of home gutters to determine if they're right for your home.

At Gutter Solutions, we would be happy to schedule a no-obligation appointment to evaluate your particular situation and offer suggestions to mitigate any rainwater disposal issues affecting your home or business.

Save Your Rainwater-Use a Rain Barrel!

Rain barrels really do help our environment! It's one way we can do our part to conserve our natural resources. By installing a rain-barrel system at your home you will:

1) Reduce flooding in your yard or your basement, by collecting the water and using it for watering plants or slowly releasing it and allowing it to sink into the ground.

2) Provide your plants with water they will love! Unlike treated water, which is "softened" with dissolved minerals, rainwater is naturally soft. The water stored in your rain barrel is better than municipal water for washing your car and watering indoor or outdoor plants.

3) Save money and water! Instead of water from the faucet, you can use the water you've saved to keep your landscape happy and growing. You'll also reduce your water and sewage bills!

4) Protect our rivers and streams! Water stored in your rain barrel is water that won't rush off into our streams. Instead, as you use the stored rainwater around the home and garden, it will absorb slowly into the ground, replenishing groundwater supplies. By decreasing the volume of storm runoff, rain barrels also help moderate stream erosion and the resulting pollution that is impairing our waterways.

Installing & Managing Your Rain Barrel System
• Choose your installation location. Place and level barrel on cinder blocks. Ensure steady footing.
• Cut downspout 18" above barrel or install shorter piece from guttering. Add an automatic diverter box and attach the diverter pipe to the barrel.
• Attach garden hose or spigot to the shut-off valve at the bottom of the barrel. To fill barrel, close valve. Open valve to use rainwater or empty barrel.
• Disconnect the barrel from the downspout during winter.

Rain-Barrel Gardening
Montana rain patterns show regular rainfall events occur during April, May and June, just when vegetable gardens and perennial beds are being established. A wise approach is to water annuals and perennials with rain-barrel water and mulch heavily to retain moisture during the drier months of July and August. Occasional rains in late summer will continue to refill the barrel.

Increasing the Capacity of Rain Barrel Storage
Many Park and Gallatin County residents connect more than one rain barrel together at each downspout. Raising the barrels off the ground by placing them on blocks will ease access to the faucet and provide natural gravity to increase water flow.

Managing Heavy Rains
It is essential to consider the impact of heavy rains on your drainage system. An overfull barrel has the potential to cause erosion around your home. If heavy rains are predicted, attach the overflow hose and aim it away from the foundation of your home.

Managing Mosquito's
Regular use of your rain barrel will prevent mosquito eggs from hatching. The rain barrel may be capped with a fiberglass screen that allows water in, but keeps mosquitoes from getting into the barrel to lay their eggs. Also to prevent mosquitoes from breeding, add a tablespoon of cooking oil to form a sheen on the top of the water.
However, if you are still concerned about mosquitoes breeding in your rain barrel, you can add a whole or a half of a Mosquito Dunk to the water to kill mosquito eggs. Mosquito Dunks can be purchased at most garden supply stores and from www.AquaBarrel.com.

Call Gutter Solutions at (406) 220-0846 for more info.

WARNING: Do not use rain barrels for drinking, cooking or bathing. If your roof is asphalt, you should not collect water for vegetable gardens.

Gutter Guards... Why You Need Them!

Benefits of Gutter Helmet

Are you tired of the ongoing maintenance to keep your gutters clean and clog-free? Installing a leaf guard is the ideal solution-for these reasons:

1) Save Money
When purchasing any high-quality product, initial investment may cause some concern, but Gutter Helmet will pay for itself with the annual savings of time, energy and expense. With gutter guards, there is no need for gutter cleaning, which can be dangerous and unpleasant if you do it yourself, and expensive if you hire a company to do it for you. Gutter screens also add value to your home. The most attractive selling points for homebuyers are often the improvements that reduce maintenance.

2) Eliminate Maintenance
Some gutter protection solutions only stop large debris. Gutter Helmet's patented system keeps water flowing freely while keeping out all kinds of debris that can cause extensive problems-especially if ignored for an extended time. Remember that unmaintained, unprotected gutters will eventually fail. Gutters are expensive. Why let them deteriorate to the point where they need to be replaced?

3) Protect Your Home
Without an adequate gutter-protection system, water will quickly back up and cause leaks. Over time, it will also cause damage to the roof, walls, siding, masonry, cement, and landscaping. Water may also pool around the foundation, leading to basement flooding, bowed walls, and even a cracked foundation!

4) Protect Yourself
Climbing up a ladder to clean a rain gutter is a dangerous proposition! Studies show that falls remain a leading cause of unintentional injuries nationwide, and 43% of fatal falls in the last decade have involved a ladder.

How Gutter Helmet® Works

It's Really That Simple!

Mike Moore

Gutter Helmet is made of a textured surface, allowing rainwater, through surface tension, to cling to the surface as it flows downward. The edge of each of our gutter guard systems is curved and extends past the edge of the gutter to allow rainwater to flow naturally into the gutter system.

Once the rainwater rounds the edge of the Gutter Helmet system, it passes through a slit that is only 3/8" wide, used to stop debris, leaves and other materials from getting into your gutters and clogging your system. While water can pass through the opening at a steady rate, debris is stopped by the small slit, allowing only water to pass through your gutters.

With the ability to handle 22 inches of rain each hour without overflowing, Gutter Helmet is the best gutter system for any home or commercial building. The highest recorded rain amount in the United States is only 11 inches each hour, proving that Gutter Helmet has the ability to handle much more than Mother Nature can throw your way.

Filter Out the Debris
With our patented rain gutter guards, debris, twigs, and leaves are kept out of your gutters. These substances are stopped at the narrow slit of the gutter system and continue on their natural path to the ground, rather than stopping and clogging up your gutters. With Gutter Helmet, you get the best gutter guard systems with a guarantee that you won't be cleaning your gutters after the next storm.

Professional Installation
Each of our systems is installed by an experienced Gutter Solutions team member who are professional and trained craftsman. When your new Gutter Helmet system is installed, if we use your exiting gutter system our technicians will clean out your existing gutters. Our technicians are mindful of your home and yard, and take the utmost care to leave your property better than it was before they came.

The methods used by Gutter Solutions installers have been approved by most major roofing manufacturers, ensuring that your roof warranty is intact after our system is installed.

Gutter Helmet® Reviews & Customer Testimonials

Dave Skattum

Customers who purchased our gutter guards have learned about their many benefits, including:
  • No more climbing ladders to clean your gutters!

  • No more water damage from overflowing clogged gutters!

  • No more dead flowers and plants from landscape erosion!

INTERVIEW WITH CAROL:
Tell us a little about yourself.
I was born and raised in Park County and lived in Livingston since the mid-1970s, when I drove the school bus and worked for the Park County Fair board. I then went to work for a Law firm as a water rights specialist for about 30 years. I like to help families find their ancestors. My pet is a small dog named Bailey.

How long have you owned Gutter Helmet?
I purchased the first Gutter Helmet's for the rental I own sometime around 2005, so I would not have to constantly clean the leaves and dirt out of the gutters several times a year.

Do you think Gutter Helmet is a good investment?
Over the years I have had to re-shingle the roof and reside the building so they have been removed and put up at least three time and still are working as well as went first installed. This has been a very good investment and I recommend anyone needing to replace gutters consider using them.

Why did you choose Gutter Solutions?
Gutter Solutions has served my needs very well over the years, so when I recently had my personal residence shingled and replaced the gutters, they were the only business I contacted. I know that the gutters, helmet and downspouts will serve my needs as long as
I need them to, and for anyone else that will own this property.

At Gutter Solutions, we would be happy to schedule a no-obligation appointment to evaluate your particular situation, to see if the Gutter Helmet is right for you, and to offer suggestions to mitigate any other issues affecting your home or business.
